Anonymous Campionese Master, Saints Gervasius and Protasius with St. Ambrose

14th century

These Gothic sculptures were reused in 1939 on the Pusterla di Sant'Ambrogio in Milan, Italy.

The brother saints wear what seems to be military garb and carry swords. The swords could refer to their martyrdom (although only Protasius was beheaded) or to an assumption, unsupported by the legend, that they were soldiers like their father St. Vitalis.
