St. Christopher

Engraving
New York Public Library, Stephen A. Schwarzman Building

In various legends current in the East, Christopher has the head of a dog or wolf. He asks God to give him the gift of speech. God does so and tells him he will be using that gift for the salvation of many.

The military garb reflects a statement in some versions that he had been captured in war.
