God Gives Christopher the Gift of Eloquence

18th century
Icon

God gives the gift of eloquence to Christopher and says he will use it to bring the Christian message to many. The saint is shown with the head of a dog. (Or is it a horse?) The cross in his hand is a traditional symbol of martyrdom in Orthodox iconography. His military garb, also traditional in the East, refers to his having been "captured in war" in some versions of his legend (e.g. BHL 1764).
