The Martyrdom of St. Blaise

15th century
Oil and tempera on panel

Three of the Blaise acta in the Acta Sanctorum (February vol. 1, 331-53) have Blaise beheaded along with two young boys, and one of these has the three martyrs kneeling, as we see here. Behind them are the executioner with the sword and the prefect (in the red hat and carrying a rod that perhaps symbolizes his office).
