Tolle Lege

1464-5
Fresco, 86.6x90.6 in. (220x230 cm.)
Church of Saint Augustine, Gimigniano, Italy

In Augustine's Confessions, he hears a boy chanting tolle, lege, tolle, lege ("take and read," "take and read"). He opens the Bible to Romans 13:14, "Put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not provision for the flesh, to fulfill the lusts thereof." This leads him to his final decision to become a Christian. The young man on the right could be any one of the companions who also converted. (They go by different names in Ryan's translation and in Caxton's.)
