Ambrosius Gander
St. Augustine

1441
Fresco
Church of St. James, Tramin (Termeno), Italy.

St. Augustine pauses while writing one of his works. Unfortunately, much of the text on which he is working has faded or flaked away. The words perdicione impiorum on the right side of the scroll are from Proverbs 11:10, In bonis iustorum exsultabit civitas, et in perditione impiorum erit laudatio, "When it goeth well with the just the city shall rejoice: and when the wicked perish there shall be praise."

This is one of a series of frescoes on the church ceiling.
