An Angel Brings Communion to St. Agnes of Montepulciano

High relief
Above the main altar of the Dominican church in Friesach, Germany

The scroll reads, from left to right, Tu nos pasce, nos tuere. Tu nos bona fac videre, Cibumque panis coelici manus ministrat angeli, "You feed us, care for us. You make us see the good, and the angel's hand administers food, bread from Heaven."

The image represents a miracle narrated in Raymond of Capua's Life of St. Agnes of Montepulciano in which an angel brings Communion to the saint. Behind her is an altar with a crucifix, recollecting another miracle in which while praying before the crucifix she was lifted up in the air. At her left is a lamb, a punning reference to her name. ("Lamb" in Latin is agnus.)
