The Martyrdom of St. Peter Martyr in an Initial P

1270-80
Tempera and ink on parchment
Metropolitan Muesum of Art 2003,27

As in many of the images, Peter is attacked with a "falchion," a sword "whose blade ends in two horns," in the words of the inquest. Friar Dominic, the other victim, is shown at the edge of the image. Both friars are tonsured and wear the black-and-white Dominican habit.

The assailants are pictured as soldiers, as in some other images, but in the vitae they are simply hired killers.
