Peter's Denial of Jesus

6th century
Mosaic
Church of Sant'Apollinare Nuovo, Ravenna

This is one of the 13 mosaics of the Passion and Resurrection of Christ along the upper band of the right wall of the nave. At the gate of the building where Jesus is being tried by the Sanhedrin, a serving woman insists that Peter must be one of the Galileans who follow him. He denies it three times, just as Jesus had predicted in the preceding mosaic. The scene is based on Matthew 26:69-75, Mark 14:66-72, Luke 23:54-65, and John 18:16-26.
