Vitale da Bologna, Ezekiel's Chariot

Circa 1351-60
Fresco
Pomposa Abbey, Codigoro, Italy

The fresco is a faithful rendering of 2 Kings 2:11-13. Elisha watches as Elijah is taken up to Heaven in a fiery chariot drawn by fiery horses. With time the horses have become somewhat blurred.

The text says that Elijah's mantle had fallen from the chariot, but in the fresco he is passing it along to Elisha. The white streak along the bottom of the image may represent the river Jordan, which Elisha will divide by striking it with the mantle.
