The Madonna and Child with Saints

1516
Basilica of St. Francis, Assisi, Italy

On the left are St. Catherine of Alexandria (wheel, palm branch, crown), St. Francis of Assisi (tonsure, Franciscan habit, possibly the stigmata on the right foot and hand), and another Franciscan saint. On the right are St. Louis of France (crown, Franciscan habit beneath robe), St. Clare (Franciscan habit, lily stalk), and another Franciscan saint.

In the gray border at the bottom the artist has placed the date, July 15, 1516. At this time it was still common to picture the child's genitalia, a practice introduced in the 15th century and gradually abandoned starting in the middle years of the 16th.
