Matteo Ponzone
St. George and the Dragon

17th century
Church of San Giorgio Maggiore, Venice

Ponzone's painting has most of the usual elements in St. George and the Dragon images: the horse, the dragon, the princess, the spear. Missing is the red-cross shield; added are the putti bringing the saint a laurel wreath emblematic of his later martyrdom. The spear is also unusual: St. George holds just the shaft in his right hand; the business end is in the dragon's mouth.
