The Resurrection and the Doubt of St. Thomas

Late 12th century
(Left side restored, 15th century)
Mosaic
St. Mark's Basilica, Venice

The scene on the left is from Matthew 28:1-10 – Mary Magdalene and "the other Mary" were on their way to tell the disciples about the empty tomb when Jesus appeared to them and "they came up and took hold of his feet, and adored him."

The other scene is from John 20:26-29 – "doubting Thomas" believes after he is invited to put his hand to the wound in the side of Jesus, who in this image is seated on a canopied throne. Of the eleven apostles, only Thomas and the person second from the left (John?) are portrayed as beardless youths.
