Anthony of Padua, Jesus Appears Before Annas

Despite the seated figure's crown and sceptre, I interpret him to be Annas, the father-in-law of Caiaphas, who interviewed Jesus before sending him on to his son-in-law, the high priest Caiaphas (John 18:12-13,19-24). In the center, a temple guard raises his hand to slap Jesus, the smallish figure in black. Only John's account of the appearance before Annas speaks of Jesus being slapped by a temple guard during the interrogation. The other gospels have the guards abusing him only after Caiaphas has proclaimed his guilt. If this surmise is correct, the next panel would represent Jesus being sent on to the high priest:
