Antonio Vivarini
Detail from Polyptych of the Virgin and Child

1449
Poreč Basilica, Croatia, originally produced in Venice

Vivarini's portrait of Anthony Abbot identifies the saint by the bell in his left hand (used by the Antonine monks to call their pigs) and the staff in his right. Usually, however, the staff has a tau-shaped top. As usual, he is pictured in the habit of the Antonine order and with a long beard. The beard is graying in some portraits but white in most.
