Guidoccio Cozzarelli
St. Anthony of Padua

Circa 1485
Tempera on panel
Columbia Museum of Art, Columbia, South Carolina, Gift of the Samuel H. Kress Foundation.

This is one panel from Cozzarelli's Four Saints. As in the Gozzoli Anthony of the same century and the same area of Italy, the saint stands in a Franciscan habit, holds a heart in his right hand, and with his left cradles a red book closed by two straps. Like many earlier portraits of the saint, this one has him well into or past middle age, though always beardless.
