The Last Judgment

19th century (est.)
Fresco
St. Michael's Church, Taufers, Italy

Like medieval Last Judgments, this fresco has the Resurrection of the Body on the left and presents Hell on the right as a great fiery maw. The saved souls on Christ's right include Saints Lawrence (with the gridiron) and Blaise (the bishop holding a candle).

The apex of medieval Last Judgments often had Christ enthroned in a mandorla, but this image integrates the Deësis into the composition, with Mary and John the Baptist on our left and right respectively and angels holding the Cross. The concept of judgment is expressed in Christ's gestures: an open hand for the saved and bolts of lightning for the damned.
