St. Christopher

Late medieval?
Wall painting
Bacharach, Germany
Church of St. Peter (Evangelical), left of the main altar.

The work has been much dimmed by time. Christopher's staff seems to have a pilgriam's gourd-hook. Unusually, Christ is presented as a youth rather than a child, and he is held in the crook of the saint's left arm rather than on his shoulder.

The church dates to the 12th/13th centuries. Perhaps the image could be dated to some time before the Reformation.
