Saint Sulpitius and the Poor
Church of Saint-Sulpice-de-Favières, Île de France
Accompanied by an assistant with a book, Sulpitius points to Heaven while addressing his congregation. His left hand holds a book or possibly a loaf of bread. The saint's two contemporary vitae emphasize his ministry to the poor both before he entered the clergy and after he resigned as bishop to serve them full-time. Neither vita mentions sick or maimed people specifically, but at least the two figures on the left appear to be physically impaired. For this reason the photographer labeled the work Saint Sulpice Guérissant les Estropiés, "Saint Sulpitius curing the crippled and maimed."
